To Detroit and back (trough Hell)

 Saavuimme Detroittiin 5.12 klo 11. Lento Noelin kanssa sujui taasen erinomaisesti, tosin itse lentokin kesti vain muutaman tunnin. Matkalaukkujakaan ei tarvinnut pahemmin odotella, sillä ne olivat edelleen tutkimusmatkalla ympäri maailmalla.

We arrived in Detroit on December 5th, around 11 am. The flight with Noel was again really easy – thougt the flight itself was only few hours. And we didn’t have to wait for any luggage, since the bags were still exploring the world.

Tiesin kyllä, että Detroitissa on huomattavasti kylmempää kuin Floridassa, mutta kylmyys yllätti silti, kun astuimme ulos kentältä. Onneksi tuottaja/manageri Don sekä säveltäjä Alexander olivat meitä vastassa ja pääsimme hyppäämään lämpöisen auton kyytiin heti ovelta.

I knew before hand that it would be cold in Detroit, but still was surprised how chilly it was. Luckily the producer, Don and composer Alex were there to pick us up.

Matkalla hotellille kävimme syömässä paikallisessa meksikolaisessa ravintolassa. Listalta löytyi tuttuja tortilloja, enchilladoja sekä quesadilloja… ja sekä uusi tuttavuus, joka paljastui juustolla täytetyksi, uppopaistetuksi tortilaksi… nam nam vaan. Sen jätin kyllä ihan suosiolla listalle.

On our way to hotel we stopped in local Mexican restaurant. There were many dishes I knew like quesadillas, enchilladas and tortillas… and a new acquaintance, a deep fried tortilla filled with cheese… yam. Yep, didn’t chose that one.

Kävimme pikaisesti heittämässä vähäiset matkatavarat hotellille ja suuntasimme lähes suorilta kohti studiota. Edessä olisi suhteellisen täydet päivät ja ensimmäinen ilta venyikin suht myöhään nauhoitusten uumenissa. Niko ja Noel rentoutuivat tämän illan nauttien hotellin pehmeistä ja puhtaista lakanoista.

So, we quickly took our stuff to hotel and headed to studio. The schedule during the five days was pretty tight and even the first day lasted way until midnight.

Seuraava päivä oli myös omistettu studionauhoituksille. Heräsimme hyvissä ajoin klo 7 aikaan aamulla. Niko soitti jälleen (sadannen) kerran lentoyhtiöön ja kyseli laukkujen perään. Tällä kertaa he eivät enää edes pystyneet jäljittämään laukkuja: ”valitettavasti emme tiedä enää missä ne ovat”. Siinä hetkessä luovuimme toivosta. Ehkä pitää vain sanoa hyvästit ja lähettää laskua vakuutusyhtiölle. Kuinka ollakaan, n. 10 minuuttia puhelusta, Don koputti hotellinhuoneemme oveen. Hyviä uutisia! Laukut oli toimitettu Detroitin lentokentälle! Uskomatonta! Eli suorilta matkaan: minä äänityskoppiin ja Niko Donin kanssa lentokentälle. Päivästä muodostuikin erittäin pitkä, mutta onnelliinen. Jei, meillä oli vihdoin puhtaita vaatteita!

The next day was dedicated to studio as well. We woke up around 7 am. After breakfest Niko called to airline company again, if they had any news of our luggage. Yees, they had… they had completely lost  them and had no way of tracking them. That was it. We said goodbyes to the luggage and started calculating the value to insurance company. Ten minutes later Don knocked the door, good news: our luggage was sent to Detroit airport! While I went to studio, Niko and Don went to get our luggage. Yei! Clean clothes!

Kolmas päivä oli pyhittty musiikkivideon teolle. Heti aamusta matkasimme vanhalle hautausmaalle. Päivä oli kylmähkö, muttei mitään verrattuna saapumispäivään. Tarkenin siis suht hyvin mekossani.  Välissä juoksin aina autoon lämmittelemään.

On the third day we headed to this cool old cemetery and spent the whole morning shooting a music video. The day was cold, but nothing compared to the first day we arrived. I felt quite ok in my dress and just ran to the car to warm my self up from time to time.

-     Kolmannen päivän iltana Don ja hänen vaimonsa Mary kutsuivat koko crewn syömään kotiinsa. Kokonaisuudessaan meitä oli vieraina äänittäjä Ven, kuvaaja Andy Parke, ohjaaja Gerge Maranville  ja säveltäjä Alexander. Söimme ihanan illallisen, nostimme maljan hyvin menneille äänityksille ja lähdimme ajamaan kohti Chelseaa, joka oli n.1,5 tunnin ajomatkan päässä. Siellä meille oli varattu aivan ihana vanha majatalo, Chelsea Victorian Inn. Olimme ainoat asiakkaat, joten saimme ihanan huoneen takkoineen. Kaiken kruunasi mahtava aamiainen seuraavana aamuna.

In the evening the whole crew was invited to dinner at Don’s and his wife, Mary’s home. The whole crew as guests were Ven, from the studio, Director George Maranville, photographer Andy Parke and composer Alexander. We had a nice dinner and raised our glasses to the project. After the dinner we drove 1,5 hours to Chelsea. There we spent the night in a beautiful old victorian house. We were the only guests and got the suite, it even had a fire place. And the breakfest in the morning was absolutely amazing!

Eniten koko reisulla olen ollut yllättynyt ihmisten aidosta lämpöisyydestä ja ystävällisyydestä.Hyvänä esimerkkinä, kun kävimme Chelseassa hotellin viereisessä ravintolassa ihastui nainen Noeliin niin paljon, että kävi hakemassa omistamastaan lelukaupasta Noelille  pienen purulelu_apinan. Ja tämä oli vain yksi esimerkki. Ylipäätänsä ihmiset ovat ystävällisiä, juttelevat, katsovat suoraan silmiin, hymyilevät ja kyselevät aidosti kiinnostuneena asioista.

I have been really surprised through the whole journee of how friendly the people here really are. A nice example was in Chelsea when we visited a restaurant next to our hotel. There was a lady there who was so thrilled of Noel that she went to get a present for him from a toy store she owned. She gave Noel a nice monkey toy and a balloon. And over all everybody has been really friendly and caring. They smile  and seem to be truly interested of you and your stay.

Neljäs päivä lähti käyntiin jälleen kerran hyvin aikaisin. Kuvasimme majatalossa musiikkivideota, jonka jälkeen lähdimme ajamaan takaisin Detroittiin. Helvetin kautta. Hah, todellakin lähellä Chelseaa on paikka, jonka virallinen nimi on Hell (helvetti). Sehän oli ehdottomasti nähtävä.

The fourth day started really early – again. We shoot video the whole morning and then drove back to Detroit .. trough HELL. Really, there is a place near by Chelsea called Hell! We just had to visit there!

      Iltapäivästä eteenpäin meille oli varattu iso studio green ja white screeneineen. Ja päivä sujahtikin äärettömän nopeasti kohti yötä.

In the afternoon we went to this studio with a huge green and white screen… and quickly the day turned into a night.

Viidentenä päivänä Don oli varannut meille vanhan talon Detroitin keskustasta, jossa kuvasimme Gypsy Lies nimistä videota. Oli aivan mahtavaa päästä kameran eteen tekemään hieman soittovideosta poikkeavaa tarinallista videota… Kaiken lisäksi itse talo oli ihan mahtava!

On the fifht day Don had booked us this old house, where we shot a video called Gypsy Lies. It was really cool to do little bit of acting in stead of just singing and playing… and the house itself was pretty cool.

Illalla ajoimme eri hotelliin Detroitin reunalle, jossa kuvasimme ns. homman purkkiin. Niko oli tosin meistä ainoa, joka pääsi huoneessa sijaitsevaan porealtaaseen…

In the evening we drove to another hotel and wrapped up the shootings. Niko was the only one who got to enjoy the Jacuzzi!

Päivät olivat suunnitelti varsin minuutti-aikataululla, joten tylsyys ei todellakaan päässyt iskemään vaan äksöniä riitti aamusta yömyöhään. Viimeisenä aamuna keräsimme kimpsut ja kampsut kasaan ja valmistauduimme henkisesti ja tavarahelvetillisesti seuraavaan kohteeseen: Show’hun Toledossa.

The days were pretty much full, so we definitely didn’t get bored. Every day was exiting and full of action from dusk till dawn. In the morning of the last day, we took our stuff and started to get ready mentally and logistically for our next location: For a Show in Toledo.
